By Michelle Roberts Health reporter, BBC News

Manuka honey could be used to combat some of the most hard-to-treat infections that are resistant to powerful antibiotics, scientists say.

Lab experiments show it can clear bacteria found in festering wounds and contaminated hospital surfaces.

It works by breaking down the defences bacteria use against antibiotics, making it useful in treating superbug infections such as MRSA.

The results were presented at a Society for General Microbiology meeting.

Professor Rose Cooper from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff found a variety of honey from bees foraging on manuka trees in New Zealand proved effective.

Fighting resistance

A specially filtered version of this honey, with impurities removed, is already used in modern licensed wound-care products around the world.

Indeed, people have known for centuries about honey's antiseptic powers.

The researchers wanted to gain a better understanding of this honey's bacteria-fighting properties and to see if it might help tackle some of the most stubborn infections encountered in our hospitals.

Professor Cooper's work with two common types of bacteria - streptococci and pseudomonads - revealed that manuka honey can deter the attachment of bacteria to tissue, which is an essential step in the initiation of acute infections.

Stopping attachment also blocks the formation of biofilms, which can protect bacteria from antibiotics and allow them to cause persistent infections.

Medical grade honey

The latest lab work showed that the honey can make MRSA more sensitive to antibiotics such as oxacillin - effectively reversing antibiotic resistance.

Professor Cooper said: "This indicates that existing antibiotics may be more effective against drug-resistant infections if used in combination with manuka honey.

"What we need to do now is look at more combinations with antibiotics and do some clinical work in patients.

"It could be applied topically to wounds and used in combination with antibiotics to treat resistant infections."

But she warned people not to try the same at home with honey bought from the supermarket. "Not only is it messy, it wouldn't be advisable. We have been using medical grade honey, not the stuff you buy in shops."

Vitamin B 'puts off Alzheimer's

By Jane Hughes Health correspondent, BBC News

Brain shrinkage is one of the symptoms of mild cognitive impairment, which often leads to dementia.

Researchers say this could be the first step towards finding a way to delay the onset of Alzheimer's.

Experts said the findings were important but more research was needed.

The study, published in the journal Public Library of Science One, looked at 168 elderly people experiencing levels of mental decline known as mild cognitive impairment.

This condition, marked by mild memory lapses and language problems, is beyond what can be explained by normal ageing and can be a precursor to Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

Half of the volunteers were given a daily tablet containing levels of the B vitamins folate, B6 and B12 well above the recommended daily amount. The other half were given a placebo.

After two years, the rate at which their brains had shrunk was measured.

The average brain shrinks at a rate of 0.5% a year after the age of 60. The brains of those with mild cognitive impairment shrink twice as fast. Alzheimer's patients have brain shrinkage of 2.5% a year.

The team, from the Oxford Project to investigate Memory and Ageing (Optima), found that on average, in those taking vitamin supplements, brain shrinkage slowed by 30%.

In some cases it slowed by more than 50%, making their brain atrophy no worse than that of people without cognitive impairment.

'Protecting' the brain

Certain B vitamins - folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 - control levels of a substance known as homocysteine in the blood. High levels of homocysteine are associated with faster brain shrinkage and Alzheimer's disease.

The study authors believe it was the B vitamins' effect on levels of homocysteine that helped slow the rate of brain shrinkage.

The study author, Professor David Smith, said the results were more significant than he had expected.

"It's a bigger effect than anyone could have predicted," he said, "and it's telling us something biological.

"These vitamins are doing something to the brain structure - they're protecting it, and that's very important because we need to protect the brain to prevent Alzheimer's."

He said more research was now needed to see whether high doses of B vitamins actually prevented the development of Alzheimer's in people with mild cognitive impairment.

The Alzheimer's Research Trust, which co-funded the study, also called for further investigation.

"These are very important results, with B vitamins now showing a prospect of protecting some people from Alzheimer's in old age," said chief executive Rebecca Wood.

"The strong findings must inspire an expanded trial to follow people expected to develop Alzheimer's."

B vitamins are found naturally in many foods, including meat, fish, eggs and green vegetables.

Experts are warning people not to start taking very high levels of vitamin supplements without medical advice.

Chris Kennard, chair of the Medical Research Council's Neurosciences and Mental Health Board, said: "We must be cautious when recommending supplements like vitamin B as there are separate health risks if taken in too high doses.

"Further research is required before we can recommend the supplement as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's."

The UK's Food Standards Agency says taking more than 200 milligrams a day of vitamin B6 can lead to a loss of feeling in the arms and legs, but these symptoms are reversible once someone stops taking the supplements.

It adds that taking 2mg or less of vitamin B12 supplements a day is unlikely to cause harm, but that there is not enough evidence to know what the effects of taking more than that would be.

Taking too much folic acid - over 1mg a day - can mask signs of vitamin B12 deficiency. An early symptom of B12 deficiency is anaemia, but taking large amounts of folic acid treats the anaemia without treating the B12 deficiency.

Boost Low White Blood Cell Count and Immune Function Naturally

(NaturalNews) Low white blood cell counts are indicative of a suppressed immune system and can have many causes. Emotional state and stress, an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, and nutritional intake can all cause lower immune system response and low white blood cell counts. Low immunity can also be caused by a number of health conditions, by surgical or medical treatments and by the natural aging process. Whatever the cause, low immunity and low white blood cell counts prevent the body from being able to have an optimum response to infections and illness. Here are some things which can help prevent low immunity and keep white blood cell counts high:

- Avoid sugar and keep sweet stuff to a minimum. Sugar prevents white blood cells from being their strongest
- Eliminate unhealthy fats. Polyunsaturated fats in vegetable oils such as corn, safflower, and sunflower oil are deterrents to a healthy immune system.
- If you are overweight, lose a few pounds. Being overweight is very detrimental to your immune system and studies have shown that overweight people are less able to fight off infection.
- Drink plenty of water to boost the immune system as well as flush out toxins
- Exercise is a proven immune system booster. Exercise is best in moderation, however, since too much exercise may wear the body down and create immune system problems.
- Avoid stress and try to relax. Stress is rightly called the silent killer and too much stress invariably leads to a lowered immune system.

Many food items help boost immune function and white blood cell counts. For example:

Carrots and other red, yellow, orange, and dark-green leafy vegetables contain beta carotene which helps protect the immune system, especially the thymus gland. Beta carotene and other carotenes also strengthen white blood cell production, and foods rich in beta-carotene help the body better fight off infection.

Yogurt can be very beneficial for the immune system. It helps the body produce antibodies and strengthens white blood cells.

A cup of kale will give you your daily requirement of vitamin A. This is an antioxidant that helps your body fight cancer cells and is essential in the formation of white blood cells. Vitamin A also increases the ability of antibodies to respond to invaders.

People who eat more garlic have more natural killer white blood cells.

Other helpful foods include chicken, kale, almonds, guava, crab, dark grapes and navy beans.

Supplements can play a big role in boosting immune function and white blood cell counts. Some examples:

- Oleander extract in herbal supplement form. One herbal oleander based supplement was 100% effective in a clinical trial of raising white blood cell counts in HIV/AIDS patients with extremely compromised immune systems.

- Astragalus root helps stimulate white blood cells and protects against invading organisms. It also enhances production of the important natural compound interferon to fight against viruses.

- Zinc is necessary for white blood cell function and it acts as a catalyst in the immune system's killer response to foreign bodies.

- Vitamin C is an immune enhancer that helps white blood cells perform at their peak and quickens the immune system response.

- The trace mineral selenium is vital to the development and movement of white blood cells.

- Both Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) and Asian ginseng provide support for the immune system.

- Echinacea helps stimulate the immune system in a variety of ways, including increased white blood cell production.

- Green Tea also stimulates production of white blood cells.

Some other potent immune boosters are pau d arco, suma, medicinal mushrooms, beta glucans and aloe vera.

Sources included:

http://www.herbalist.com
http://health.howstuffworks.com

Polyphenols and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Contribute to Building New Brain Cells

The results of the study highlight how a diet rich in polyphenols and polyunsatured fatty acids can actually prevent neural death, and strengthen neural networks. This information is particularly useful to those suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer's. Since Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease, a diet high in polyphenols and polyunsaturated fatty acids may be extremely beneficial. The regenerative properties of such a diet could act as a natural aid in the fight against cellular degeneration.

The olfactory bulb and the hippocampus are the two areas of the brain in which neurogenesis occur. The study found that the mice that were given a diet high in polyphenols and polyunsaturated fats had a much higher rate of cell creation in these areas than the mice that were not. According to the study, these findings show that such a diet could indeed delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease. It is possible that the diet could even determine the severity of Alzheimer's.

To ensure you are getting enough polyphenols and polyunsaturated fatty acids in your diet, try adding a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables to your dietary regiment. Another popular choice is the supplementation of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is in many essential fatty acid supplements. DHA is typically in fish oil supplements, which usually contain other beneficial ingredients such as EFA (eicosapentaenoic acid), another omega-3 fatty acid. Thanks to the demand for such great natural supplements, purified fish oil can now be purchased for a reasonable price.

The findings of this study help establish the effectiveness of natural health alternatives in addition to a properly constructed diet. Those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases now have other options when it comes to treating, or possibly halting, their conditions. In addition to a healthier lifestyle, a diet rich in polyphenols and polyunsaturated fats is a step in the right direction when it comes to reaching your health goals.

Tip 1; Prostate- as well you know the importance of prostate health is getting a lot of attention at the moment. The mineral Zinc is more abundant in the prostate than any other organ in the body, and its supplementation has been shown to reduce overgrowth and symptoms associated with enlarged prostate. The herb Saw Palmetto reduces enlargement of the prostate gland as the herb contains active fatty acids and sterols that can reduce the production and activity of the hormone that triggers prostate enlargement.

FDA Study: Lead Levels in Lipstick Much Higher than Previously Reported

FDA Study: Lead Levels in Lipstick Much Higher than Previously Reported

FDA won’t say which brands had most lead; still has no standard for lead in lipstick

San Francisco – A new study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found lead in lipstick at levels much higher than those detected by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) in a 2007 study that received international attention.

FDA found lead in all 20 lipsticks it tested, at levels ranging from 0.09 parts per million (ppm) to 3.06 ppm – more than four times higher than the highest lead level of 0.65 reported in the 2007 CSC study. FDA used a new testing method to analyze lipstick and concluded that earlier methods likely underestimated the amount of lead in lipstick.

FDA noted that three manufacturers had the highest levels of lead, but they did not name those brands. In 2007, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report also found that a few brands had consistently higher lead levels, including L’Oreal, Maybelline and Cover Girl.

Health experts say lead in lipstick is a health concern in any amount.

“Since recent science suggests that there is truly no safe lead exposure for children and pregnant women, it is disturbing that manufacturers are allowed to continue to sell lead-containing lipsticks," said Sean Palfrey, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and public health at Boston University and the medical director of Boston's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.

“Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems such as lowered IQ, reduced school performance and increased aggression. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure, because lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain where it can interfere with normal development,” said Dr. Palfrey.

“Lead builds up in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels,” said Mark Mitchell, M.D., MPH, president of the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states: “No safe blood lead level has been identified.” The agency suggests avoiding all sources of lead exposure.

Yet FDA has no standard for lead in lipstick. “Pregnant women using lipstick are unknowingly exposing their fetuses to unknown and unregulated levels of lead. FDA should immediately set standards to require manufacturers to make lipstick as safe as possible,” said Lisa Archer, national coordinator for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics at the Breast Cancer Fund.

The FDA study found an average level of lead in lipsticks of 1.07 ppm – more than 10 times higher than its own standard for lead in candy. FDA’s standard for candy is based on the lowest lead level that can be achieved. A similar standard should be applied to lipstick.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics also urged FDA to release the names of the brands tested in the study and lead levels found in each. “The public deserves to know which lipsticks contain the most lead. FDA used taxpayer money to conduct this study and the results should be fully and readily available to the public,” Archer said.

Clinical Research: Barley Grass Supports Cardiovascular Function

People who regularly consume powdered organic barley grass juice supplements could be providing a boost to their cardiovascular system, according to research recently published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal, Diabetes and Metabolism (2002, Vol. 28, 107-114).

Ya-Mei Yu and Chingmin E. Tsai from Fu Jen University in Taipei together with fellow Taiwanese researchers from China Medical College in Taichung found in a clinical study that supplementation with barley grass helped reduce the levels of cholesterol and oxygen free-radicals in the blood of type 2 diabetics.

In the study, 36 randomly selected type 2 diabetics were randomly assigned to receive daily supplements of barley grass, a combination of vitamin C and E or a combination of barley grass and vitamins C and E for four weeks. Past research has indicated that antioxidants vitamin C and E when taken together may promote cardiovascular function.

The researchers found that supplementation with barley grass reduced the levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and oxygen free-radicals, in addition to protecting LDL-vitamin E content and inhibiting LDL oxidation. The authors noted that barley grass "acts as a free radical scavenger." Particularly noteworthy are the data showing barley grass, when taken with vitamins C and E, more effectively lowers the level of free radicals than either barley grass or the vitamins when taken alone. The researchers concluded that supplementation with barley grass in combination with antioxidative vitamins may have a protective effect and promote healthy cardiovascular function.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has said that using a sunbed is as dangerous as smoking tobacco; that there is a definite link between sunbed use and the most deadly form of skin cancer. In Britain and Ireland the authorities are considering banning sunbed-use to under-18s, and they want to outlaw coin-operated sunbeds too.

If you must lie in the sun, take good care. Apply a high SPF sunscreen, and never lie around for hours, or between the hours of 11am and 3pm. If you do burn, stay in the shade until you are healed. Have a cool bath and apply a compress. Never scratch the sun burn, because this makes it worse. The message though, is be careful. Whenever you expose your skin to the sun you increase your chance of skin cancer. Always protect your skin against the sun.

And for most of us, the quality of our sleep will decrease at some point in our lives. While different types of insomnia have different causes, most people can find relief through the following regardless of the source of their sleeplessness:

Establish a consistent bedtime routine, and try to go to bed at the same time every night.

Cholesterol and tips to lower it

For people battling high cholesterol, choosing meals wisely can be a challenge, but it is essential. Restaurants, parties, and lunches caught on the run during work can make it hard to pick out whats healthy or not. But simple dietary modifications can help you eliminate those unhealthy choices, while still allowing you to enjoy your meals. Try these healthful ways to help lower your cholesterol:

1. Reduce saturated fat. The richest sources of saturated fat (fat that is usually solid at room temperature) in the diet are red meat and dairy foods. Choose more lighter protien such as fish or vegetable protien such as beans, nuts and soya. Use low- or non-fat dairy products.

2. Avoid trans-fat. Stay away from items that list "partially hydrogenated oil" on the label, especially snack foods. Try baked or air-popped versions instead.

3. Use fresh garlic regularly in your meals. Garlic has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels.

4. Drink green tea daily. The antioxidants in green tea help lower cholesterol and prevent the cholesterol in your blood from oxidizing.

5. Eat plenty of soluble fiber. It has a powerful cholesterol-lowering effect. The best sources are beans and lentils, apples, citrus fruits, oats, barley, peas, carrots and freshly ground flaxseed.

While we constantly hear about how healthy water is for us, too much of a good thing is possible. Drinking lots of water in a short period of time, say a few hours, can lead to "water intoxication." Although rare, this can be quite dangerous, and even fatal, if not treated promptly and properly.

While our kidneys are capable of processing about 60 glasses of water a day - almost four gallons - most people need nowhere near that much.

The recommended amount of water to drink per day is between 1and a half to 2and a half litres. Tea and Coffee do not count, herb teas do. Drink regular glasses of water throughout the day, and be conscious of drinking more if you are in a very hot, dry climate or are doing sports.

The healthiest water to drink is water that has been purified through a carbon filtering system. Water purifiers clean water by removing toxins, metals and chemicals and are widely available from health stores.

If you feel like your memory is getting worse with every passing birthday, you aren’t alone: it happens to all of us as we age. The good news is there are ways to help prevent or lessen memory loss.

Challenge yourself. Medical evidence suggests that lifelong stimulation is the key to building and maintaining brain cells, staving off memory loss and maybe even preventing more serious disease. Pick up a book and take time to read instead of the TV, start a new hobby, engage in an active social life, sign up for a creative coarse whether it’s a musical instrument, drawing, knitting sculpture of cookery. Learn a new language, or develop your computer skills. There are so many fascinating things to do and as well as kepeing your brain in great shape you will have fun too. .

Advantages of Mineral Based Sunscreens:

Safe for the whole family including babies & children age six months and up.

Mineral pigments protect as they build an almost invisible film on the skin’s surface, reflecting harmful UV-A, B and C rays without the need for chemical filters. Skin is protected against UV damage, sun-induced aging and sunburn.

Free of oxybenzone and cetyl cinnamates, which mimic effects of estrogen in the body.

Waterproof formulas protect immediately upon application, unlike synthetic sun-protection with requires a half hour to become effective.

Ideal for sensitive skin, wide range of sun protection factors from SPF15 to SPF40.

Product is completely biodegradable.

Facts about SPF

Sun Protection Factor Ratings (SPF) is a measure of a sunscreen's effectiveness in providing protection against UVB rays.

How much UVB does SPF 15 actually block? How about SPF 30? Based on the Colipa (European) sunscreen regulations:
For SPF 15, only 7% of the harmful UVB rays will get through
For SPF 30, only 4% of the harmful UVB rays will get through
For SPF 60, only 2% of the harmful UVB rays will get through

As you can see, SPF 60 is only 2% more effective than SPF 30, SPF 30 only 3% more effective against SPF 15. SPF 10 already protects you from 90% of UVB rays.

The NEW COLIPA (EUROPEAN SPF) standards

The newly implemented Colipa rating in Europe now requires that a UVA protection form 1/3rd of the total SPF rating. Hence if the UVA protection is SPF 5 and the UVB protection is SPF 30, the overall SPF allowed to be displayed on the product is 15, despite the fact that the UVB protection is actually SPF 30.

Lavera Sunscreens and the Colipa Standards

The current 2009 Lavera sunscreens sold are rated in accordance to the 2008 European (Colipa) rules - the SPF rating displayed is the measure of effectiveness against UVB. The UVA requirement of 1/3 UVB is a tough requirement for any natural sunscreen to achieve, and has resulted in a number of European natural sunscreen vendors exiting the market. Lavera remains committed to the natural sunscreen market and is working on an all natural formulation for 2010 that will provide a UVB protection of SPF 30 and a minimum UVA rating of SPF 10, hence an overall SPF of 30.

Vitamin D deficiency and SPF

Of note in the wikipedia article is the reference to findings that Sunscreens do hamper Vitamin D production in the body. "The use of sunscreen also interferes with vitamin D production, leading to deficiency in Australia after a government campaign to increase sunscreen use. Doctors recommend spending small amounts of time in the sun without sun protection to ensure adequate production of vitamin D. When the UV index is greater than 3 (which occurs daily within the tropics and daily during the spring and summer seasons in temperate regions) adequate amounts of vitamin D3 can be made in the skin after only ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen. With longer exposure to UVB rays, an equilibrium is achieved in the skin, and the vitamin simply degrades as fast as it is generated.". In fact, a recent study claims that at least 75% of Americans are Vitamin D deficient.

So, too much of a good thing can be bad. SPF 30 already protects against 96.7% of UVB rays, SPF 50 against 98%. You don't really need a higher SPF. And you might want to consider Vitamin D supplements!

Interesting Facts About Synthetic Sun Ingredients:

Recently released scientific studies by Switzerland’s Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, conducted in 2001, prove a link between synthetic sunscreens and hormonal disturbances in the body. The chemical compounds in synthetic sunscreens have been found to accumulate in body fats and in breast milk, and, by mimicking the effects of estrogen, can induce undesirable hormonal changes.

Understanding UV Rays

Ultraviolet rays can be subdivided into three different wavelength bands: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. This is simply a convenient way of classifying the rays based on the amount of energy they contain and their effects on biological matter.

UVA(Ultraviolet-A)
UV-A rays do not have enough energy to break apart the bonds of the ozone, so UV-A radiation passes through the earth's atmosphere almost unfiltered. UV-A penetrates the skin deeper than UV-B, causing wrinkles and skin aging. UV-A may directly cause some skin cancers, including melanomas.

UVB(Ultraviolet-B)
UV-B rays have a higher energy level and a shorter wavelength than UV-A. As their energy is often not sufficient to split an ozone molecule, some of them extend down to the earth's surface. Burns skin in less time than UV-A light. Causes basal and squamous cell carcinomas, types of skin cancer.

UVC (Ultraviolet-C)
UV-C is most energetic and most harmful. Luckily, most of UV-C rays do not reach the earth’s surface because of the ozone layer.

Both UV-B and UV-A rays can be detrimental to our health, so it is important that we protect ourselves. This can be done through a variety of ways. The most obvious is to reduce the amount of time one spends in the sun, particularly between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm, when the sun is at its highest in the sky. However, especially during the summer holidays, this may be difficult to adhere to. Alternatives include covering up with clothing, or applying sun-protection.

Lavera offers a variety of mineral-based sun-protection products that are safe and effective for your entire family.

Calculate Your Recommended SPF

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, increases the length of time you can stay outside in the sun without incurring sunburn or irritation from UV-B rays. At present there is no standard to measure protection from UV-A rays.

Calculate your recommended SPF:

Rate yourself:
Select your skin type. The corresponding amount of time indicates how long you can stay safely in the sun before burning.
Fair skin - 10 minutes
Olive skin - 15 minutes
Dark skin - 20 minutes

Look at the SPF on your sunscreen
Note which SPF is stated on the product labeling, eg. SPF 20

Calculate your protection time, the amount of time you can stay outside before burning:
Multiply the sun safety time for your skin type with the SPF listed on your sunscreen.
eg. 15 minutes (for olive skin) x SPF 20 = 300 minutes (5 hours) of sun protection
Result: Olive skin using a sunscreen with SPF 20 can under ideal conditions stay in the sun for up to 5 hours.

Sun Safety Tips

Apply sun screen carefully and generously. Re-apply after swimming.

Apply sun protection even whilst in the shade; you are still exposed to 40% of the sun's UV radiation.

At the start of the summer, choose a high factor (SPF 30 and up), and only stay out in the sun for short periods so as to acclimatize your skin gradually.

For the best protection under make-up, use Anti-Aging Sun Screen SPF20 Face for two in one moisturization and sun care. Use a small amount and allow a few minutes for the light fluid to absorb before applying make-up.

Take particular care of babies and children in the sun, and always ensure they are wearing clothing and a hat for extra protection. Pediatricians recommend babies under 6 months stay in the shade and receive minimal exposure to direct sunlight.

Sunlight is strongest between 11 am and 3 pm. Avoid direct sun exposure at these times.

When traveling, remember: if you are bound for snow or water, they reflect sunlight, intensifying its UV rays, so you will need to choose a higher sun protection factor - SPF 30 and up. Near the equator and in mountainous areas, the sun's rays are also more intense, so again, use SPF 30 and up.

Swimming and sweating will remove sun screen, always re-apply after exercise.

After sunbathing, treat skin to a generous application of After Sun Lotion. With organic jojoba and vitamin E, it works to re-nourish and nurture sun sore skin.

SAFETY NOTE: Natural, mineral based sunscreens are especially important for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Studies have shown that the chemicals in synthetic sun screens can accumulate in the body, and can mimic the effects of estrogen. They have even been found in breast milk.

Lavera Sun sensitiv sunscreen with new EU regulated UVA labelling on all of its 7 products in 2009

* 7 times x improved absorption
* 7 times x improved consumer friendliness due to the new sunscreen formula

For over 21 years lavera Naturkosmetik has been devoted to one single aim: to produce highly effective natural cosmetics to give all its customers a feeling of well-being. Skin care and protection are as important as these products` best possible skin tolerance.

The seasonal sun care products are still a special challenge for lavera Naturkosmetik. Since, as with all other products from laverana², the following rule applies to natural sunscreens: only ingredients which fulfil the guidelines for certified natural cosmetics and of course the requirements recommended by the EU commission are used in the manufacturing process.

Since 1990 Lavera Naturkosmetik has been offering alternative sunscreen products with mineral sunscreen filters. The principle is easy and taken from nature. Just as an elephant protects its hide against UV rays by showering itself with sand, i.e. minerals, physical sun protection factors lie directly on the skin where they reflect the sun`s rays, which is of particular importance in the summer and sun seasons.

Research and development never stand still - Since 1990 lavera Naturkosmetik has been offering optimized formulas every year – obviously one of the reasons why lavera Sun sensitiv` has a market share of over 52% in the natural food trade, according to an evaluation by bioVista (*evaluation period 01-12 2008)

For the summer-sun-season 2009/2010 lavera, together with a only a few other manufacturers of natural cosmetics, is offering mineral sun protection - a total of 7 sunscreens.

Lavera will be offering titanium dioxide as a sun protection filter and as two „sun seasons“ ago, zinc oxide once again, the quality of which has considerably improved and which we can therefore use again. Our new sunscreen formula, which is produced by laverana itself, makes Sun sensitiv sun protection products even more consumer-friendly:
- the products can be absorbed even more easily by the skin
- due to the new formula of the sun protection filter we have been able to reduce the slight “whitewash” effect of the minerals even further
- the nourishing qualities of the products have also been improved - zinc oxide is well-known for its skin soothing properties and in
addition to that its reflection capacity with regard to UVA rays exceeds that of titanium dioxide by far.
- all products are in line with the new Colipa guidelines and display the new UVA label (ratio of UVA:UVB wave absorption 1:3 according to the recommendation of the EU-Commission)

There are good fats and bad fats. And its well known that we eat too many bad fats and too little of the good fats. Omega Oils are good fats and are known as Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils. Omega-3 and Omega-6 , are both essential for human health. However, the typical adult consumes far too many omega-6 fats,ie corn, sunflower and canola oil, in their diet while consuming very low levels of omega-3 fats, fish, flaxseed and nut oils. The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is 1:1. Today, though, our ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 averages about 20:1! Omega 3’s help maintain a healthy heart and brain and is especially needed for overall cell health.
