The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has said that using a sunbed is as dangerous as smoking tobacco; that there is a definite link between sunbed use and the most deadly form of skin cancer. In Britain and Ireland the authorities are considering banning sunbed-use to under-18s, and they want to outlaw coin-operated sunbeds too.
If you must lie in the sun, take good care. Apply a high SPF sunscreen, and never lie around for hours, or between the hours of 11am and 3pm. If you do burn, stay in the shade until you are healed. Have a cool bath and apply a compress. Never scratch the sun burn, because this makes it worse. The message though, is be careful. Whenever you expose your skin to the sun you increase your chance of skin cancer. Always protect your skin against the sun.
